Samsung's Terran Rookie
Translated from Esports.uzoo.net:
SKY Proleague 2006 Season 1, SK Telecom vs Samsung Electronics
2nd Set, The Eye: iloveoov (Terran, 11) vs CuteAngeL[Name] (Terran, 7)
SKY Proleague 2006 began at the end of a long wait. Just like the coming of a new season, the rookies exhibited blinding efforts during the first week. Among them was one particular rookie that caught the public's attention - Samsung's Terran: CuteAngeL[Name].
What AngeL achieved during his Proleague debut was extraordinary; he demonstrated an overwhelming gameplay against iloveoov, SK Telecom's ace, and seized the first victory, shifting the atmosphere towards the Samsung team. His victory meant more than just defeating oov, but also strengthening Samsung's previously weak Terran lineup.
A Daring Initial Build
AngeL began the game with a daring no-barracks, double-command play. Because the seige tanks could attack the front command center on the map The Eye, this particular build could have been unreasonable, but he kept in mind of this possibility.
As oov attacked his command center with seige tanks, AngeL kept perfect composure and repaired the command center with SCVs as he defended with wraiths. In addition, he positioned seige tanks beforehand to cut off any reinforcements. Even more impressive was that he did not concentrate on an excessive defense line, but instead secured only the strategic points of the map. One particularly remarkable play was when he attacked the one goliath with seige tanks, maximizing the strength of the wraiths.
Just as oov freely used the double-command play in the past, AngeL did the same. oov tried to hold the frontline of the opponent, starting with a two-factory build, but ended up instead giving up his own cliff of the front expansion, and the expansion timing was delayed severely. It seemed as though oov was taken aback by AngeL's play that was similar to his style.
Understanding the Map Draws the Line for Victory
AngeL clearly had a better understanding of the map that day. He quickly secured the strategic points of the map with his units and stole the opponent's attack-timings with a surprising attack with a very few seige tanks. On the other hand, oov made a careless effort to defend his cliff, and felt some economic pressure.
Because the center region of The Eye is very critical, it demanded a high usage of tanks. Realizing this, AngeL included wraiths to extend the field of vision and gained many small advantages in the skirmishes. oov added goliaths to counter the wraiths, but he could not win against AngeL's ground units which consisted only of seige tanks.
AngeL defeated oov along the key points of the map, eventually destroying oov's command center and winning the game. It can be viewed that the play of blocking the early southward movements of the opponent and gradually advancing was the decisive result.
AngeL even grasped the opponent's hidden expansion timing. It was because he accumulated more scans from his double-command build. As soon as he discovered the expansion at 1 o'clock, he sent his units before oov could arrive, and adroitly seiged his tanks beforehand. Also by holding the strategic points of the map that defended his own expansions, it was easy to continue expanding.
Efficient Use of Units
Though he expanded early, AngeL did not leave any resources unused. He constantly constructed tanks from his three factories and lead with more units than oov throughout the entire game. In contrast, oov could not make units smoothly because his command center had been destroyed once, and he failed to continue expanding because he could not hold the strategic positions of the map. One can infer that he was not able to hold the key points of the map because of his insufficient units.
While AngeL attacked oov's 1 o'clock, he held the cliffs of 12 o'clock and completely decimated oov's will to expand. Angel also invested the leftover minerals from the early expansion in vultures. Just before the end of the game, he controlled a unit count of about 140 as he defeated oov.
He knew the way to win. Though it was just one game, the viewers could sense that AngeL knew the method of winning. Was it because he dominated throughout the game, though it was a fairly short one of about 16 minutes? Whatever the case, one can definitely predict that he will strengthen the Terran lineup for the Samsung team.
AngeL used a no-barracks, double-command strategy and unfolded a daring play. Furthermore, he knew the opponent's counters beforehand and had an exceptional control over the strategic points of the map. His use of units was exceptional in attacking the 1 o'clock expansion, and from his greater comprehension of the map, one could sense the amount of his preparation just for a single game. One could especially sense his level of experience by the way he constantly moved his units in the centerfield, confronting oov's southward movements throughout the game.
Though we will have to wait and see his abilities versus the Protoss and Zerg, one can evaluate his exceptional grasp of the game in its entirety. Samsung must restore their weak Terran lineup with rookies such as AngeL and Lee Sungeun (FireBatHero). Let's remember that Sea[Shield] strengthened last season's POS (currently MBC Hero). If these Terran rookies provide a strong support, it's possible that Samsung could go to the finals this season.
